The African Petroleum Producers’ Organization and Afreximbank formally established the Africa Energy Bank (AEB) on October 31, 2026. According to Oilprice.com, the institution is specifically designed to provide financing for oil and gas infrastructure projects that Western banks and development lenders have dropped under their respective climate commitments.

The launch follows a lengthy development process that took more than four years to complete and was approximately 20 months behind the original schedule. Oilprice.com reports that Abuja was selected as the host city, beating out bids from six other countries, including Algeria, Benin, South Africa, and Ghana.

This new lender emerges as African nations seek alternatives to secure capital for domestic hydrocarbon development. The AEB held its inaugural general meeting in Abuja to formalize the entity, creating a dedicated financial vehicle intended to sustain energy production across the continent in the face of a broader international shift away from fossil fuel investments.
