A little fuel for thought.

🛢 Crude, explained

WTI is a U.S. oil benchmark; Brent is a global benchmark tied to North Sea crude. Both are quoted in U.S. dollars per barrel. One barrel is 42 U.S. gallons.

🔥 A different kind of energy

Henry Hub natural gas is quoted per million British thermal units (MMBtu). Gasoline and heating oil futures are quoted per gallon. Compare mode shows percentage performance so different units can share a chart.

Our local price archive

Every price and chart comes from observations saved in our database. Markets appear only after data has been collected. Free Yahoo Finance data supplies explicitly named NYMEX contracts for WTI, Brent, natural gas, gasoline, and heating oil. Other Yahoo benchmarks use rolling futures symbols with unverified contract months. Free ICE expiry calendars identify the nearest unexpired month; ICE does not supply our quote prices. EIA provides daily regional spot prices and weekly U.S. retail gasoline and diesel prices, including taxes. The World Bank Pink Sheet adds monthly Dubai crude, Australian and South African coal, European gas, and Japan LNG import averages. Spot prices, dated futures, and rolling futures archives are labeled and kept separate. No sample prices or estimated gaps are used.

Reading the charts

For the five dated futures benchmarks, 1D and 5D charts show only the contract quoted above. Longer ranges use the separately stored rolling futures archive: delivery months change over time, so its latest price can differ from the headline contract. Other markets use their native daily, weekly, or monthly archives. Published EIA and World Bank observations have no open, high, low, or volume fields; these charts use lines or areas. All observation dates are UTC. Monthly timestamps identify the reporting month, not a live quote or publication date. Missing observations are omitted. Each chart shows its saved date range and observation count. A shorter or sparse archive is shown as it is.

Comparisons & contracts

Futures changes compare the same contract with its previous close. We retain a contract through its published last trading date and roll on the following New York calendar day, after a validated import. NYMEX Brent and ICE Brent are different contracts: even the same delivery month can differ by exchange and quote time. Free quotes may be delayed; identical prices across sites are not guaranteed. Published-price changes use the previous saved observation at that market’s reporting frequency. Comparisons align common observations and start each market at 0%. Add up to four comparison markets. Moving averages use displayed observations. TTF is quoted in EUR per MWh; other markets use USD in the unit shown. No exchange-rate conversion is applied. Front-month futures roll between contracts and are not spot prices or adjusted continuous return series.

Updates & publication delays

The page checks our database every 15 seconds. The scheduler collects named-contract and rolling futures prices every five minutes and daily futures observations hourly. Expiry calendars are refreshed daily. EIA data refreshes daily at 22:15 UTC, except on the first of each month when a full archive refresh runs at 23:15 UTC. The World Bank archive is checked daily at 21:45 UTC; new averages are normally published monthly. Initial imports collect at least ten years where available. EIA publishes after the observation date; these are not live quotes. Observation dates remain visible. EIA daily observations older than ten days, weekly observations older than fifteen days, and monthly observations older than seventy-five days are flagged. Other daily observations are flagged after four days; intraday futures after 30 minutes. If an import fails, the last successful observations stay available.
